A custom appointment type is a simple appointment with just a name and an optional duration — no price, no inclusions, no service category. Custom types don't appear in marketplace search; they're only available during the booking flow once a patient has already chosen your practice.
Common uses: Existing Patient Follow-up, Hygiene Recall, Treatment Review.
What you'll need
- A name.
- Optional: a default duration.
Steps
- Go to Setup → Appointment Types.
- Click Add Appointment Type.
- Switch to the Custom Type tab.
- Enter the Name.
- Optionally set a Default Duration in minutes.
- Click save. You'll see "Custom appointment type created successfully" and the dialog closes.
After adding a custom type
- Enable it on at least one practitioner under Practitioners → edit a practitioner, in the Appointment Types card. See Choose which appointment types a practitioner can do.
- If you're integrated with a PMS, map it to the PMS equivalent. See Map appointment types to your PMS.
Tips & things to watch for
- Custom types won't bring you new patients via search. If you want patients to find you for a specific service, use an offer type instead.
- The portal's own dialog reminder: "Custom appointment types are only available during the booking flow and won't appear in search."
